New OpenNTF Project – Password Tracker

Prompted by a blog
entry
by a Windows Admin I used
to work with in Ireland I have
released
on OpenNTF
a small application
that I wrote a few years back to assist large IT environments to store
and manage the passwords used by all their servers and appliances etc.

This simple notes client application
makes use of  Reader and Author fields to control access to the passwords
stored in the database so you can restrict the viewing of passwords to
just the people who need to know them. This is a simple project and probably
won’t see many updates unless some fantastic ideas are posted to the feature
requests section of the project.

Hopefully this will come in handy for
somebody.

Notes Domino 8 Beta 3 Now Available

It looks like the Notes/Domino 8 Beta 3
files are now
available
to download
.  I’ve already
updated my server to the latest code :

A picture named M2

Installing the Notes 8 Beta 3 client
on Windows Vista did throw up one small problem.  If you have UAC
disabled then you need to start the installer in ‘Run As Administrator’
mode by right clicking on it and selecting the option from the menu. If
you don’t do this then the Java Provisioning server doesn’t start up and
the install will fail.

Apart from that both the install and
the actual running performance in beta 3 has greatly been increased. Now
to look around and see what else has changed.

Sametime 7.5.1 Mac Client

It’s great to finally see the released
SameTime Client for the Mac but I do have to ask one question? Did you
do any beta testing on the mac side of things at all?  With a marked
increase of Notes / Domino professionals moving towards the Mac client
you’d think there would be enough people to invite for testing of a specific
implementation. Of course having people testing is one thing, actually
listening to their feedback is another.

A few of the problems that are in the
gold release of Sametime 7.5.1 Mac were also in the beta client. Things
like the About and Preferences menus under the ‘SameTime’ menu not working,
but their counterparts under the file and help menus working fine.

Tried setting your geographic location
yet? The mac client can’t save it, it complains that the Location Server
could not be found.  This works fine on the windows version of the
client.

But the biggest flaw I’ve found.  It
doesn’t honor the Mac’s Dock properly.  After starting the application
it adds a nice SameTime icon to the dock. Wanting to have the SameTime
client start automatically I did what I normally do on the Mac, I right-clicked
the icon in the dock and selected the ‘Open At Login’ option. After rebooting
to test the SameTime client didn’t, instead I got a Java console that did
nothing. Starting SameTime actually runs java with a few parameters, the
dock icon is just an alias to the java executable without the parameters.
So no auto start of the client for me.

So come on IBM, why not take advantage
of ALL your community users and start a program for them to have early
access to these betas and then listen to their feedback.  Design Partners
and Sametime related business partners are one thing but the people you’ve
got to make happy are us early adoptors who are going to blog their results…
Good or Bad…

How NOT to get to ILUG 2007

If your one of the lucky people to get
their name on the list for ILUG 2007 then you probably have your travel
plans sorted out by now but if not then beware of Google Maps. It appears
that the ‘Get Directions’ feature may have you doing a lot of swimming if your
traveling to Dublin from the USA and at a 30 day trip you only have a few
more weeks to get packed and ready.

Of course buying an airplane ticket
might be a better option.
