Lotus Workplace V2 Beta

If you have access to the IBM PartnerWorld For Software download site then you can get your hands on the Lotus Workplace V2 Beta. It was released on the site on the 23rd January but we were probably all too busy at Lotusphere to notice.

I’ll be downloading it tomorrow and hopefully I’ll have a bit more luck installing this version then I did with the previous one. I’ll report back soon with any findings…

One very interesting thing I noticed in the readme file was the following

The process of installing Personal Productivity on the smart client platform is a composite of four main installation components.

  1. Workplace 2.0 Smart Client Platform
  2. WAS Express server (to enable offline capabilities and emulate a local WebShere Application Server (WAS) version 5.0.1
  3. Cloudscape database library (contains local library files for WAS Express)
  4. Personal Productivity application consisting of features and plug-ins including mail, calendar, instant messaging (IM) and configuration files for offline capabilities, which are activated on-demand by the Workplace server

Does this mean that a mini version of WAS is installed on the client machine to provide the offliine services that would be similar to the Domino Sync Manager that is used in DOLS? Would this install not require a powerful client computer? Does it not seem like overkill? I suspose we will have to wait to find out.

Another New Blogsphere feature

I’ve been working on the Blogsphere template all night and I’ve added a few new features. I promise that I’ll release the new template soon. I just want to make sure it’s well tested and that all the new stuff is working ok first. The new template has a lot of additions so there is a lot of testing to be done.

So what is the wonderful new feature that’s been added… Well it’s only a small feature but makes a lot of sense. Basically in the contact details block the email address could be spidered and then spammed. I’ve added some simple code to this so that the email address is broken up using javascript which should make it harder for a spider to notice.

More New Toys

Ed Brill is not the only one who’s been out buying new toys this week. I’ve been doing a little online shopping of my own and I purchased a lovely new home computer to add to my ever growing collection.

Rather then buy a complete PC from any of the major manufacturers I decided to buy all the components and build it myself. A number of reasons for this, the main one being that all the main retailers here in Ireland insist that you purchase a monitor as part of the overall kit and seeing as I already have a nice 21inch monitor sitting on my desk I don’t really need another. Also, by buying components I can make sure I get exactly what I want and also have the fun of putting it all together.

So what did I want? Well I purchased my first AMD based PC with a Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard, an AMD Athlon XP3200+ processor, 2Gb Ram and a Nvidia GeForce FX5950 Ultra 256Mb Graphics card. All of this ( along with the case and other components etc ) should assemble into a pretty fast machine that will won’t be out of date till at least next week.

All this just so I can enjoy HalfLife 2 when it’s eventually released.

Portal Express on XP

Just been chatting to somebody about Portal Express. I’ve been trying to get it up and running in my test lab for the past week but to no avail. It keeps stopping at the bit where it tries to install the Websphere Application Server. I still haven’t figured out why, but while we were chatting he mentioned something interesting…

Apparently Websphere App Server V5 will run on Windows XP Professional. This means you should be able to get a fairly basic portal server up and running on your personal machine for testing purposes. It’s not supported but apparently it’s in use in an internal IBM site somewhere.

I haven’t tried it yet but if you have wanted to test Portal Express then this info might open a few new doors for you…
