iDM : Return On Investment

Last week or so I had Wild Bill over to assist with the install of iDM and it has been purring away for over a week now handling requests from all our branch offices.

Over the week it has processed over 100 requests, from new users, user deletes and group management requests. Normally all these requests would be reported to our helpdesk, logged onto the helpdesk call tracker system and then sent over to the Notes admin team for manual processing. Now the IT staff in the branch offices just enter their requests into iDM and they are processed within 20 minutes.

That’s less work for the helpdesk guys in logging the calls and less work for the Notes admin team for manually carrying out the requests and with 100 requests a week you can quickly see how iDM pays for itself fairly quickly. Instead of working on ID requests I can now concentrate on other projects.

If you haven’t seen iDM yet then I would really recommend that you check it out…

Reducing View Index Sizes

One of the most common reasons that a view’s index size can get very big is due to the sorting options on the columns. Following on from the discussion about large applications the other day I would guess that some of the databases mentioned have view indexes that account for over 50% of their real size. You can see this with the R5 & R6 administration client, just go to the files tab, find the database you want to examine and then rightclick on it and choose ‘Manage Views’.

But how do you make the indexes smaller…

What’s The Biggest…

Ok, an interesting question to put to everybody…

What is the biggest Lotus Notes .nsf file that you have ever seen. Personally the biggest I’ve seen was about 5Gb in size, I know there are bigger out there but I’m interesting in knowing what the biggest you have ever come across is. Please post a comment with the biggest you have ever seen, even if it doesn’t beat the current top size as I’d like to get a good idea for an average .nsf size also…
