World Wide Wiki – Replacing Lotus Notes

Business Week is looking at the world of Wiki’s with an interesting article of how a Wiki’s are starting to find their way into large companies  and that “They’ve become a cheaper, more flexible collaboration alternative to both overtaxed e-mail and complex groupware such as IBM’s Lotus Notes.”

With Wiki software readily available for free on that will run on Domino we can easily see how Lotus Notes will always have the upper hand. It can take on the challenge of the new ‘social’ software era with ease. With templates for blogging, wiki’s and the ability to add RSS feeds to a lot of application lotus Notes can be quickly extended to provide the features in other software packages without the cost.

So what’s next for social software…  PodCasting seems to be making waves in some circles… Who’s going to PodCast at Lotusphere this year

Knowing Your Limits

One of the other notes admins ( Thanks Kev ) where I work was troubleshooting an archiving problem and came across an interesting limitation.  The user was selecting documents and using the ‘Archive Selected Documents’ option and coming up with with an error ‘Archive Operation Failed’

It turned out that the user had selected over 4000 documents for archiving and that this was well above the limit that Domino could handle for that operation. We are currently trying to find the exact number at which the limit kicks in but it’s somewhere between 2000 and 2050.

Maybe it’s time for a new limit to be added to this document that lists all of the known limits in Domino.

Update : Looks like 2047 is the magic number.  Just have to confirm it on another set of documents.

BlogSphere News

Work on the BlogSphere V1.2 Release Candidate is coming along nicely. Myself and Christian have been busy plugging up all the bugs that have been reported up on OpenNTF and also adding new features like the Mail IT feature. If your visiting the site and not reading this with an RSS reader then you will see a nice little envelope icon just beside the PermaLink. Clicking on this will create a new email in your default email client with the subject line and body of the message prefilled with the title of the blog entry and url link.

The idea for this new feature came from Volker Weber and he kindly gave permission for it to be added to the BlogSphere template. The next release should be available soon.

OktoberFest

I’m off to Munich next week for a few meetings and as it happens OktoberFest is currently on so it should be an interesting few days. My hosts over in our Munich office have already made reservations so there’s going to be plenty of beer going around. Last year I was in Munich assisting with the setup of our office over there one week before OktoberFest started, I was staying in a hotel right beside where they hold the festival and everyday I could see them making all the preperations, it was such a bummer having to leave just before things started. I’ll make up for it next week however.

While I’m in Munich I’m going to have a look around for a certain person that Ed Brill met while he was over there last March. I’ll be checking up to see if he ever received his copy of the photos..
