MS Application Analyzer 2006 for Lotus Domino – New Build Available

Looks like MS have sneaked a new build
of their application analyzer for Lotus Domino out the door earlier this
week without anybody noticing.  There’s no details on what has been
fixed in this new build or if the ‘default’ settings XML file has any changes
in it. Maybe
Paul
will be doing
another
review
soon.

Download the new build here.

Oh, and it won’t install on Windows
Vista beta yet

A Vista / Longhorn Issue for Lotus Domino Server

It seems like MS are trying to make life
difficult for the Domino administrator with some of the decisions that
have been made for their latest operating system that is currently in beta.
It would seem from information in the beta newsgroups that the ability
to log onto the server’s console session 0 is being removed in future releases.

So what does this actually mean. Well
currently when you login directly to a Windows server at the physical machine
you are logging into the root console session, this session is where you
can see the Domino server running so you can enter commands etc.  If
you use Remote Desktop to access the server you are actually creating a
new session and you won’t be able to see the Domino server’s console screen
( adding ‘-console’ to the remote desktop shortcut’s param’s will override
this ).

In Longhorn Server, as it is currently
known, it appears that MS are making it so that even logging in directly
at the physical machine will create a new session and therefore any application
that interacts with session 0 ( like Domino ) will not be visible.

Maybe this will just become a good reason
to start thinking about moving your Domino server to Linux.

CTRL-Shift-F9 in Windows Vista

When your in a database in Lotus Notes
and your press the CTRL-Shift-F9 key combo then Lotus Notes will rebuild
all of the view indexes in that database.  This is how it has worked
for as long as I have been working with Lotus Notes since V4.5.  It’s
a key combo that a lot of admins are probably fairly familiar with.

What’s this got to do with Windows Vista?
Well as a member of the Vista beta I’m now running the latest Vista build
here at home, so far it’s been fairly stable for me and i’ve only had to
bug about 10 items I’ve come across, the latest bug I’ve submitted is that
the CTRL-Shift-F9 key combo has been taken over by the OS and no longer
works in Lotus Notes.  CTRL-Shift-F9 turns on and off the new Vista
‘glass’ effect.  When you have Lotus Notes in focus and press the
key combo then the index rebuild does not occur any more.

I’m curious as to what will happen with
this bug report. Will MS change the key combo in time for the final build
of Vista or will Lotus have to change the key combo it uses for the index
rebuild?

Maybe we should just follow IBM’s lead
and all move to Linux. I know if they released a standalone version of
Lotus Notes with the designer and admin clients for Linux I’d switch tomorrow.

Update : Anybody else who is
on the Windows Vista beta can validate this bug report
here.
