HowTo : Upgrade the firmware on the LG SuperBlu BH200

HD DVD or Blu-Ray. It’s a choice that has
been imposed on the consumer by the various manufacturers and studios that
promote the different standards. However there is a third choice, a DVD
player that will play both formats. The LG SuperBlu is one of these dual
format players, the only other that I know of is the Samsung BD-UP5000
but that is not available yet.

The LG SuperBlu BH200 has full support
for both HD DVD and Blu-Ray including the BDJava and HD-i interactive additions
that can now be found on an increasing number of titles ( the older BH100
did not support the interactive features ). After connecting up the player
and testing it I have to admit that I am very happy with the purchase,
one device instead of two and I also managed to reduce the cabling behind
my TV by going with HDMI for video and an optical cable for audio.

Looking at the LG
Service website
I did notice that
there was a newer firmware for the player. After downloading the file I
noticed that the upgrade instructions were not very clear at all.

[
DVD and USB Write method]
The update program (“LG_BH_LV221BH.ROM “) the write it does in
Root directory of Blank DVD.
(file name: LG_BH_LV221BH.ROM , volume name of Disc: anything is OK)

The name of the single file in the zipfile
that I’d downloaded was LG_BH_LV221BH.ROM_1119F_PRODUCTION. Do I write
this file to the DVD or do I rename it.  There was no way to tell
from the service website. Thank goodness for rewritable DVD’s

So the proceedure is fairly simple :

  • Download the new firmware file from
    the LG Service website

  • Unzip the file
  • RENAME it so it just ends in .ROM
  • Burn it to the root of a blank DVD (
    rewritable is best )

  • Insert the disk in the BH200 player.
  • The player will detect the upgrade and
show you the old Firmware version and the new firmware version.

  • Click OK to upgrade the device.

I hope this helps anybody else who purchases
    the LG SuperBlu BH200.

Happy Birthday WebLog

Did you know that the word ‘WebLog’ was
coined today, December 17th, in 1997?

While it wasn’t shortened to ‘blog’
till 1999 the blogosphere has grown up in the past 10 years, going from
blogs where people had to manually edit html files to modern blog editing
suites that manage content and comments all in one easy package.

Even within the Lotus communnity we
have seen a big uptake in blogging with IBM themselves even joining in.
By purchasing and including the DominoBlog template in the Lotus Notes
server products they have helped raise awareness of blogging at the corporate
level which in turn has helped more IT professionals find the still growing
Lotus blogging community.

So I would like to wish the ‘WebLog’
a happy 10th birthday.

And to think, somebody somewhere ( who
will remain nameless unless they want to leave a comment and admit to it
) once said that there would be no need for a Domino based blogging template
as there will never be more then 100 domino based blogs.

Yellow Badge or White Badge

Some more details about Lotusphere 2008
are appearing on the official Lotusphere website. Details on the LotuSalon
and the agenda are now available.

One interesting note is how they will
be splitting the Opening General Session. On registration you will either
be given a yellow name badge or a white name badge. The color of the badge
will determine which OGS you will be attending.

8:00am – 10:00am Opening General Session
(Yellow Badges)

9:00am – 10:00am Lotusalon 2.08 (White
Badges)

or

11:00am – 1:00pm Opening General Session
(White Badges)

11:00am – 12:00pm LotuSalon 2.08 (Yellow
Badges)

Hopefully somebody in IBM has a nice
big long list of bloggers and can make sure they get yellow badges so that
they can live blog the OGS during the first session.

There are also a couple of other keynote
sessions being held during the week. On Tuesday there is a keynote on Unified
Communications, On Wednesday a keynote on Social Software and Thursday
sees a keynote on Application Development.

Jamfest will be held on Monday night
after the product showcase reception and SpeedGeeking will be back on Wednesday
night before the party ( Still no clues as to where that will be held,
I’m hoping for MGM or MagicKingdom ).

Bluewave Acquires BE Systems

Some great news in the IBM Business Partner
world reaches us today from ‘The View’ conference in Barcelona where both
Paul
Mooney
and Warren
Elsmore
have announced that their
respective companies,
Blue
Wave Technology
and BE
Systems
, are now one with Blue
Wave acquiring BE Systems.

As some readers may know I worked for
Blue Wave Technology about 6 years ago when the company was still in it’s
infancy with only 12 staff members. It was a great job with a great group
of people who really know their stuff when it comes to IBM Lotus products.
Everybody knows Paul’s record when it comes to admin knowledge but
behind Paul there are some fantastic notes developers that have produced
some amazing applications for their clients. That group has now grown to
over 40 people, moved to bigger offices and with this latest news has expanded
their direct reach into the UK.

So congratulations to Blue Wave Technology,
especially Paul, Harry, Dan, Wayne, Lorraine and Fiona, Your hard work
in creating Blue Wave has certainly paid off and increased the awareness
of IBM Lotus technologies in Ireland and the UK and congratulations to
BE systems, your joining a great family of dedicated Lotus professionals.
