RSS Feed TrackBack

I’ve been playing around with the different RSS Newsfeed readers out there and for Windows users there is a great reader called SharpReader. It has all the features of the other 3 panel type readers, including categorisation of feeds, import and export of OPML files and Auto Discovery however it has got one very interesting feature which I think we will see a lot more of in other readers soon.

If you are subscribed to more then one RSS feed and one of the feed entries contains a link to one of your other feeds entries then SharpReader detects the link and creates a nice tree like structure linking the entries together. Kind of like trackback but done with RSS feeds. I love this feature, it helps me see who has links to any of my entries.

Now, if only everybody could get RSS feeds for their sites….

Blocking SameTime Access

An interesting question came up while I was teaching the Lotus Sametime 3 Admin course at the start of the week. One of the students in the class inquired as to if you can stop a user from using the Connect Client to chat.

Take a large company that has a Lotus Domino infrastructure. They decide to install a SameTime server within the existing infrastructure and thus all the users will be entitled to access the SameTime server with their username and internet password. The company then deploys the Connect client to all their users and now users can chat to each other. After a while it is decided that certain users should not be able to use the client to chat. How do you remove their chat rights. Removing or changing their internet password is no good because they need it for other things.

Anybody got any ideas?

Isn’t it nice when things just work

If you haven’t seen the new Honda Accord advert called ‘cog’ then get ready for the most facinating two minutes you will ever spend in front of the screen. This advert is 100% real. There were no camera tricks, no splicing of tape together and it took 606 takes to get it perfect.

Global Domino Development

Developing any application when part of a team takes coordination above all else. While most development environments have source control and locking Domino has, until version 6, really lacked in this area. Now that Design Locking has been added in ND6 group development has not just gotten better but in my opinion a lot better then any other environment out there.

With the power of cross certification, Domino Designer and Instant Messaging a group of developers from all around the globe who have never met each other can work on a single application. This is exactly what happened today when two members of the Domino Community got together to give a hand with BlogSphere. With three of us all working on the template at the same time and instant messaging to allow us to chat everything went perfectly. Nobody overwrote anybody elses work or caused anything to stop working. Development like this is easy to manage in Domino.

I can see it now. A SameTime… sorry… IBM Instant Messaging enabled version of Domino Designer that has a small panel on the side to show who is ‘in the template’ and the ability for group chat.
