Lotusphere 2004 : Opening Session

Well the rumours are true. Patrick Stewart opened the session this morning with the Star Trek theme tune filling the room. Telling us that Lotus Software was bolding going where no other software has gone before he was followed by some great demo’s that proved him right.

The BIG news for all us Domino fans is that the IBM Workspace Client was demoed today with LIVE WORKING CODE. With a release date within the next 4 months this is an amazing achievment. The client looked a little cluttered to me but it had all the functionality that I was looking for.

DOMINO APPLICATIONS RUNNING DIRECTLY IN THE WORKSPACE CLIENT. Yes, you read that correctly. Domino applications. Not web based domino apps but the real thing that you and I use today. I’d say that this is the one function we all wanted to know about and seeing it working is a great feat for Lotus.

On to the product showcase… Keep checking back for more updates.

Jumpstarts and Tomorrows Keynote

Well the first day is over and what a day it has been. The jat lag has kicked in a bit but I still managed to get to a few of the jumpstart session and so far I have to say that I’m still happy about where Lotus is heading in the future. Between web services and WorkPlace there is a lot of cool stuff happening in the Lotus world. Hopefully I be able to talk about a few of those thiings tomorrow after the opening keynote speach.

Rumour has it that Patrick Stewart will be the guest speaker tomorrow. I heard from another blogger that he has checked into the Dolphin so we will just have to wait and see… Personally I think it will he would make a great speaker. Till tomorrow…..

Domino 7 : Web Services

[

Well I got here ok.  Thankfully there were no delays on any of my flights which meant I got in on time and was able to go to Gonzo Lotusphere party last night.  A good crowd turned out and at last I’l managed to put some names to faces…

Today I was at JMP103, an introduction to web services.  The session itself was fairly long and dealt more with the history of web services but the last 20 minutes or so were very interesting.  They talked about what was coming in the next version of Notes and I have to say that I’m impressed with what I saw.

In Domino V7 Designer you will have the ability to code web services directly in lotusScript.  You define the data types if required and then just write the class.  When you save your new web service the Domino Designer will automatically generate the WSDL for your new service.

This is definitly something that will make writing web services a lot easier.

Getting There…

Myself and Rocky have been working hard all day adding CSS tweaks and reworking how content in BlogSphere is generated and rendered into HTML and we are starting to see some of the results of all our efforts. This blog’s frontpage is now using the new updated design and I personally think that it is a little bit faster. The amount of DIV’s and SPAN’s used to display the list of blog entries has been halved and those that were left have been tidied up and there are no more computed subforms to work out what side blocks go where so this should also produce a performance increase.

Alex Hernandez has also been working on the Web Poll feature and this is now finished and is being working into the new display system by Rocky. I’ve been playing about with them and I have to say they really rock. I’d say that this is one feature everybody has really been waiting for.. Thanks Alex.

All the changes that we have been making have made us realise that the next non-beta release of BlogSphere may be the last R5 compatible release. There are a number of ND6 development features that we would like to use to help with the performance of the blog. What do you think about this? Is there anybody using BlogSphere on R5 or would most people be happy for V2.0 to be written entirely for ND6 ? Leave a comment and let me know…
