Windows Vista on ThinkPad T43

Windows Vista has finally been launched
and is available to purchase from your local computer store. As part of
the beta test group for Vista I’ve been running it on my various computers
for the past year and I have to say that since the RTM release in November
the only issues I’ve had is the lack of drivers, but all that changed today.

Most companies have been holding off
on releasing their drivers till the launch today, even microsoft have been
holding out on a few extra fixes as starting my laptop today it downloaded
about 8 hotfixes from the windows update website.  One thing I have
missed on my T43 Thinkpad is the fingerprint reader and the new updated
software for that was released today also, infact nearly all the typical
thinkpad software extras have been updated for Vista and released today.

So if you have a Thinkpad and your interested
in running Vista you will be pleased to know that you won’t lose any of
the extra features like the fingerprinter reader, client security system,
hotkeys, presentation manager, power manager etc. They all seem to be working
fine here.

Did the Dolphin overcharge you ?

Checking out of the Dolphin hotel after
Lotusphere we discovered a few odd charges on our bill.

First off we had been double charged
for internet services on a couple of days, this probably happened as we
had two computers in the room and switching computers meant signing up
again but as a service they advertise it as a per day charge with no mention
of not being able to change computer etc. I asked the person at the checkout
desk about it and they said that we shouldn’t have been charged it as it
was covered by the resort package fee.  A few seconds later and the
charge was removed from the bill.

However that’s not the most interesting
thing we discovered, The hotel had split the our hotel bill in two, one
for Terri and one for myself, with half the room charge on each bill and
half the taxes etc but each bill also included the full resort package
charge for each day. After I’d gotten the bill combined into a single bill
there was still only one resort package charge per day. So anybody who
was sharing a room and got separate bills would have been charged that
little bit more.

Oh and is it just me or has the level
of service and overall cleanness of the Dolphin gone downhill over the
past few years ?

What’s new in Domino 8 designer

So what’s up and coming in Domino 8 Designer…

Web Service Consumer. Use Import WSDL
in a script libary to get access to the functions. This creates the classes
in the declarations area of your script library which can be either lotusscript
or java. Then just save the library. then just ‘USE’ the library and call
the functions in the script library. looks very easy and very powerful.

Domino DB2 Integration. In Domino 8
it will be available to everybody, in Domino 7 it was only available to
select customers. You can use it to pull in relational data to your domino
database.

Composite Apps. Using the wiring ability
of Domino 8 you can interact between different components of different
databases in a single screen. In domino designer there is a new type of
design element for compApp properties and CompApp applications. It uses
WSDL to store these properties but it is not  web service. A WSDL
editor will be provided by Domino Designer to help you create your WSDL’s.,
then use either a column’s properties to select the element that is published
during wiring or a new view event called ‘OnSelect’. Action buttons can
consume the event and a new lotusscript class called ‘NotesPropertyBroker’
can be used to talk to the components. Designers should think about what
properties they should publish while building new apps, even if not used
it saves a lot of rework in the future.

View Enhancements. ability to put preview
on the side but also your app can say what columns to display etc when
the preview is on the side so your user doesn’t have to scroll. Split actions
allow the abilty to have a toplevel action that does something and a downarrow
beside it to allow extra actiosn to be selected. Contacts has a new business
cards view. Can all be done in designer 8 for your own apps with new view
properties. There is also the ability to add tooltips from fields in the
database of the selected document. so you could hover over the subject
and have a tooltip of the first few lines of the email message, There is
also a tab navigator that will add the a-z tabs immediatly to your view.

There is also the option to hide all
the rightmenu option so you can have total control over what appears there.

You can now select any column to expand,
so you could have the subject column to expand to use up the window size
even if it’s in the middle.

Thumbnail support. there is a new richtext
lite option called thumbnail that you can specify in your own specified
size. Then you can use these in your views, handy for contacts or any app
that deals with images.

Lots of Script and @ language additions:
 too many to list here.

New agent types. ‘When Server Starts’.
Any agent with this set will execute once when the server starts up.

New database option to stop full text
searching when there is no full text index.

Ability to add seperators to outlines
to make them look a bit nicer.

Eclipse. Full support for designer in
eclipse is being demo’d by Maureen Leyland. This is still in development
and will not be available for Domino 8. Some cool things, script library
class browser. Color coding as you type, not as you go to the next line.
Use plugins for example opening a stylesheet will use an eclipse CSS editor,
Lots of new functionality can be provided.

Hints Tips And Tricks

The answer to all your ‘I didn’t know notes
could do that’ questions Alan is giving a presentation based on the information
on his blog. http://www.alanlepofsky.com . He is using Lotus Notes 8 for
his demos in standard mode not the eclipse version proving that all these
tips are forward compatibale as well as backwards compatible.

Tip 1 : Hiding and moving the menu bars

Tip 2 : The bookmark bar, one click
access to databases and the ability to drag anything to the bookmarks,
including external applications. In notes 8 you will be able to hide the
bookmark bar and have it only show when you click the launch button.

Tip 3: the status bar. know how to find
your access levels, read the status log etc. but the one people don;t use
much is the quickpick on the right with easy access to create new mails,
replicate etc.

Tip 4 : Tabs. a feature of Notes since
V1 ( IE7 is only starting to catch up with the whole tabs concept ). CTRL-TAB
will switch thru tabs in the same way that windows alt-tabs thru programs.
Rightclicking tab allows you to open a tab in it’s own window.

Tip 5 : The Startup folder. In the ‘More
Bookmarks’ bookmark there is a folder called statup and if you drag databases
or links to it when notes starts then the links in that folder will auto-start.

Tip 6 : there is a folder in the ‘More
Bookmarks’ bookmark called ‘Create New’. You can drag a blank document
in a database and then drag the tab for that blank document into that folder
and it will appear in the ‘create New’ toolbar option.

Tip 7 : switching views. hold the ctrl
button down when you switch and the document you had highlighted will be
the one highlighted in the new view.

Tip 8 : Action button shortcuts. Hold
hown ALT and numbers appear over items, while holding down alt you can
press the number and the action is performed.

Tip 9 : Copy Selected As Table. Demo
of this feature pasting to Excel was well received.

Tip 10 : Keyboard Shortcuts. F2/Shift
F2 to change text size.

Battery Runing low and no power anywhere
here so going to have to sign off this entry….
