Multilingual WorkPlace Services Express

A little while ago I blogged about a method to get the lotus Notes client in multi-lingual mode so that we could deploy the latest version in all the languages that we support in the company.

Today I was giving a quick demo of WorkPlace Services Express to somebody in Germany and when we loaded the webpage up on their computer it was all in German. We logged in and everything inside WSE was also german.

Playing around with my Internet Explorer settings I changed my default language to each of the languages that we support and Workplace automatically switched to each of them with no problem, including the Chinese and Japanese languages.

This is a cool feature and like all the other cool stuff in WorkPlace Services Express this feature doesn’t require any special settings, it just works.

Signs Your Notes Developer Needs More Training

As a notes admin you have to deal with the average user queries every day, you know the ones, how do I add a signature to my emails, how do I archive my mail etc., but what do you do when the notes developer asks the questions. Talking online tonight with another notes admin this topic came up after they were asked by their developer if it was possible to debug lotusscript so here’s just a few that I’ve heard about in all my years of working with Notes.

  • How do I turn on the script debugger?
  • What’s a mail-in database?
  • Can we give everybody manager access to this database?
  • What does signing a database mean?

Do you have any more to add?

Sick of Referrer Spam

I’ve noticed a few other BlogSphere users talking about Referrer Spam and how they are constantly having to clean out the referrer logs. Well while we can’t stop people from spamming the site BlogSphere does have a way to check referrers and not display them if the referrering site doesn’t have a link to you.

To enable this option there are a few things you need to do. You need to make sure that the signer of the database has the ability to run restricted agents and then enable the ‘Verify Referrers’ agent. Then in the Referrer Blocker configuration profile turn on the option not to display referrers. The next time you get a referrer in the blog will wait till the verify referrers agent has run to check to see if the referrer is valid. If it is then it will go into the valid referrers view and if not into the blocked referrers view. The referrer block will only show valid referrers.

One of these days I must write some documentation

How the Lotus RSS Feeds Saved The Day

If you haven’t already subscribed to the Lotus Support RSS feeds then make sure you do so now.

The RSS feeds deliver out a batch of the latest technotes every day during the week and sometimes the information can really save you a lot of time, just like this one that arrived today :

Technote 1197501 : File Issues with Domino Server 6.5.2 FP1 and 6.5.3 FP1

I was due to do an upgrade of all our servers to 6.5.3FP1 later this month but by having the rss feeds I got to see this technote as soon as it was released I’ve saved myself a days work as I would have just done the upgrade with the FixPack that I downloaded last week.

Thank you IBM/Lotus for taking RSS seriously and putting it to good use.
